Rock / Indie

We are all drifters. Whether itâs drifting from job to job or between relationships, lifeâs struggles and disappointments frequently drive us to search for greater security, happinessâ¦truth. Itâs no surprise that in our wandering, which often seems endless, we become discouraged and even desperate. We need to know that rescue is on the way. Credential Recordings band Seabird offers just that assurance on its debut album, Til We See The Shore.
Consisting of brothers Aaron (vocals/keys) and Ryan (guitar) Morgan, as well as Chris Kubik (bass), and Aaron Hunt (drums), the Cincinnati-based band initially formed in 2004 when entering a local âbattle of the bandsâ competition. Its first national project, a collaborative effort with producers Jacquire King (Modest Mouse, Kings Of Leon, Tom Waits, Switchfoot) and Allen Salmon (Mute Math, This Beautiful Republic), is an attempt to meet its fans where they are, to craft an album that âshare[s] the emotions, victories, and defeats we all experience as normal, every day people,â says Aaron.
The band is proud of its ability to connect with listeners on their level, something that sets it apart from other artists. âOur songs are about real life struggles, relationships, losses, bittersweet goodbyes and finally having the courage to tell your childhood sweetheart you love her,â Aaron explains. But itâs not all trial and tribulation. âThere is a redemptive quality present in this record,â he continues âeven in the darker moments. We hope this record will be an oasis for those who were left thirsty by years of heartache.â
Influenced by the sounds of classic bands like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd, Seabirdâs dynamic musical style gives roots to its soul-searching lyrics. Its upbeat pop sound, described by The Myriadâs John Roger Schofield as âlike swimming in a summer river out in the clear, crisp, delicious mountains,â incorporates adventurous melodies with sharp hooks throughout the albumâs 12 tracks.
âLet Me Go On,â for example, âis about the power of a great song,â says Aaron. âEither a song moves the listener and leaves them with an unforgettable melody or story, or it doesnât. If itâs the latter, itâs not worth keeping and especially not worth performing. Musically this is one of my favorites, because the melody takes so many turns from verse, to chorus, to bridge and really makes an immediate impact on the listener.â
The albumâs Coldplayesque piano-driven track âRescueâ is equally stirring. Co-written with Bear and Bo Rinehart of NeedtoBreathe, âRescueâ iterates, according to Aaron, âour need to be rescued from our own failures and defeats. For me it was a cry for help so to speak.â
Ultimately, rescue is what itâs all about for Seabird. âWe want to be approachable and to write songs that people can rely on,â says Aaron. âWe want the listener to remember that there is always something worth fighting for, and someone around to help keep our heads above water.â For the guys of Seabird, itâs a poignant message that continues to play on repeat long after the music stops.â
