From the first time Nate touched a piano at the young age of 8, it was evident that his love and passion for music would grow. The untamed zeal at which Nate learned instruments, sang from his heart, and wrote lyrical prose finally sprung into performances in 2005.

Having played in several bands in the late 90's in Florida, Nate returned home to his native Georgia some years back and began writing again after a prolonged hiatus. With his ancestry and roots in British lore and music, Nate began to spend multiple summers in England and Scotland soaking up the history, beauty, and legend. Thus his acoustic love took over and song after song began making their way out of his heart.

The end of 2006 saw Nate, along with his band (thus the feature name of the Nate Currin Band) release his first EP, Another Long September that featured 4 songs and became a hit among the popular venues in the southeast US that Nate frequented.

In the meantime Nate had begun work on his first, full-length album, which would come to be known as the Darkest Sea. "It's an album full of passion, full of release, full of longing", describes Nate, "Much of the album was written as the beginning of a story years ago, and then several of the tracks were almost a recap, a retelling, and an end to the storytelling and so the work was complete."

The Nooze takes the opportunity to sit down with one of Atlanta's most popular contemporary folk artists... Nate Currin

The Nooze: Most musicians start drawing influences from the time of early childhood. Would you say this is true with you?

Nate: Yeah, I guess so though neither of my parents were overly musically inclined. My dad wanted me and my siblings to learn a musical instrument so I started taking piano lessons at a pretty early age. I started writing my own material in middle school, and began playing around on the guitar in high school.

TN: The material on "The Darkest Sea", your first full length cd, seems to be very acoustic guitar oriented. Do you write mostly on guitar now?

Nate: Mostly, but I still write some material on the piano. I feel like the guitar helps me to express the emotion behind each composition a little better.

TN: Having listened to "The Darkest Sea", I have to say that it is certainly aptley titled. The material seems to come from personal experiences that might not have been all that pleasant. It is definitely on the dark side.

Nate: For me, the cd is about personal experience and observations on relationships and internal struggles we all face at one time or another. These experiences can be good or bad. Each song on the album is more or less a picture of my past, my faith, and my experiences.

TN: Who would you say your influences are?

Nate: Counting Crows, Bob Dylan I really like Bright Eyes I feel that Connor Oberst is one of the great lyricists of our time.

TN: Is music all you do now?

Nate: I graduated college with a marketing degree 4 years ago and I worked at that for a while but for the last couple of years Ive been fortunate enough to have enough support from friends and family to devote all my time to my music. Im currently in negotiations
with a couple of record companies and Im really hoping to be picked up by a major label soon.

TN: Well the cd sounds great! Where did you record it?

Nate: We recorded the album at Sound Ecape Studios in Toccoa. It was engineered by a good friend of mine named Chris Chambers. Then we had it mastered by Glen Schick in Atlanta.

TN: Who played on it with you?

Nate: Mainly the guys that support me in my band: David Anderson on lead guitars, Adam Clark on keys, Andrew Ferguson on percussion and then I was fortunate to be supported by Rachel Stump vocally and Bob Christmas on violin. They all did a great job and I am truly grateful!
